The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards was formed in 1987 as the result of the work of a task force charged with exploring the possibility of national teaching standards. The mission off NBPTS is “to advance the quality of teaching and learning by maintaining rigorous standards for what accomplished teachers should know and be able to do.” (www.nbpts.org)
The two-year journey to become a NBCT requires the completion of an extensive portfolio containing four written entries with direct evidence of accomplished teaching. Collaboration with a classroom teacher is critical for Library Media certification. A written test is also required.
A media specialist from Georgia was on the committee that wrote the certification standards for Library Media/Early Childhood through Young Adulthood, and the first class graduated in 2002. There are currently 2137 nationally board certified library teachers, with 112 in the state of Georgia.
