Georgia Library Power
Rebecca Amerson

This booklet is compiled to increase your parents’ understanding of what the school library does and how it helps every child in the school. It provides hundreds of tips on how to help build readers, wise technology users, and an information literate 21st century student. The 53 pages cover the following general topics: an introduction to school libraries and the research done in each state, information literacy, technology, reading, and organizational ideas.

Individual pages include topics such as:

  • What every parent should know about school media centers
  • Helping your child with information
  • Tips for homework help (The last tip is: Don’t do the projects for your child!)
  • Cut & paste – plagiarism is a major problem
  • GALILEO
  • Website evaluation
  • Advice about reading and your child (One suggestion: Be sure your child has a
    lamp by his bed.)
  • My child hates reading! (The man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who cannot read them…..a quote by Mark Twain on page 61)
  • Volunteering at the school library media center

Our own Judy Serritella has co-authored this book to make sure that information specific to Georgia was included, such as: GALILEO, our state reading programs, Georgia’s Exemplary Media Program, and more.

Georgia Library Power can be purchased as a CD or book and each page can be duplicated as much as the librarian likes for the parents of a single school. The purpose of this book is to get the message out to parents that school libraries impact student achievement! With this in mind, pages would be great for newsletters, parent awareness nights, mailings, workshops, and handouts to give prospective parents. As a purchaser of this book, you would have the rights to reproduce any of the pages for your parents and your school. You can even sell copies to benefit your library program! (Be sure to read the copyright guidelines on back of the title page!). Georgia Library Power! is a recommended addition to your professional collection!
