Now is the time members of the House of Representatives to hear from you (email is a great way to do it!) regarding the cuts to media center funds and the potential loss of expenditure controls.

Here are some sample emails to give you an idea of what to say. You all do a geat job -- be yourself. Don't threaten or blame. Ask for help but don't demand it. For all of the following email examples, use the following subject line: Media Center expenditure controls

Sample e-mail for those of you who aren't receiving the money you earned based on your FTE:

I am a Library Media Specialist in (name of county or area of GA. If you want to name your school that's up to you. If you do, make sure you still tell them the system name). I currently receive $ ____ to buy materials for my Media Center and we have _______ students. (Provide some examples of how much some materials cost). With the expenditure controls we have now I am struggling to provide materials my students and teachers need. I am greatly concerned that the removal of these controls could mean I wouldn't get any money for materials that would greatly impair my students abilities to achieve. Please do not allow the removal of expenditure controls for Media Centers!

General Emails:

#1
HB 1190, Section 3, removes the expenditure controls for Media Center funds. Please do not allow this to happen. We need to protect the little money we have (cut from $19.54 per FTE to $9.77 per FTE in 2002). Library Media Specialists teach all students in the school (BRIEFLY describe how). We also help teachers teach by providing supplemental materials for their curriculum (give a couple of examples). Please help us continue to provide the best education we can to our students. KEEP THE EXPENDITURE CONTROLS FOR MEDIA CENTERS!

#2
Retain the expenditure controls for Media Centers! If they are removed we run the risk of media centers not getting any money to buy new materials. How can we expect our students to achieve if they have to use outdated information for research projects? Teachers rely on the media center for up-to-date information to supplement their students' often-outdated textbooks. In addition, for many of our students the school media center is their only option for checking out books. The media center is an invaluable resource used by the entire school - teachers and students. Please help us keep our funds and KEEP THE EXPENDITURE CONTROLS FOR MEDIA CENTERS!

EMAILING TIPS

* MAKE SURE the Subject line contains the words "Media Center" with either "funds" or "expenditure controls"
* Make sure to tailor your message and vary from the suggested text and include facts specific to your media center situation.
* Keep it short and to the point
* Don't blame for the past cut in funding. It's done.
* If you live in their district or your school is in their district, make sure to note that in your email
