Tips and Tricks: Book Share at Alexander
II Magnet
By Laura Mestler
At Alexander II Math and Science Magnet School, we do "Book
Share". Book titles are pasted onto construction paper. We
get the titles from a list printed out from Bound-to-Stay-Bound,
Follett, or another jobber or book company. We use the color purple
for math and science titles, green for K-3 titles and blue for
4-6 titles. Parents come into media center and choose a title
from the cards. They pay for the book, the A/R quiz, and the processing;
they find the total amount by looking at the price listed on the
card. These titles are sold during the last week of January and
first week of February. I always sell during the monthly PTA night
meeting as well. Valentine cards accompanied by a little goodie
are sent to those children whose families have a purchased a book.
When the books come in, we have a party to celebrate their arrival.
Parents come, we create "this book donated by..." labels,
and then pig out on pizza! A local pizza operator donates the
pies. The kids who donated the books are the first to get take
them home, so I have them checkout out and ready to go home from
the party. We had 350 kids first two years we did this; first
year sold 30 books, second year sold 70 books, this year our population
went up to 460 kids and we sold 168 books. It is a win-win for
everyone! Parents have easy Valentine gift for their child, the
child loves the book label and the party, and the library gets
new books!
