North Central District Meeting
The fourth North Central District Meeting was held on April 26th, 2007 at Harmony Elementary School and Pickens High School. Tamara Boggus, media specialist at Harmony, and Sharon Rasco, media specialist at Pickens High School, were our hostesses for the day.
Jack Weaver, a retired school principal from Cherokee County, was featured in the morning’s presentation. Mr. Weaver, who presently teaches ESOL part-time at elementary schools in Cherokee County, is a published author. Uga Hunkers Down is the story of Uga and football game traditions at UGA. Besides sharing his book, Mr. Weaver also shared reading and motivational strategies he incorporates not only in his teaching but also in presentations when he speaks with children. Best Practices by Level (Elementary – Pickens County Kelly Posey and Susan Grigsby; Middle – Cherokee County Kris Woods; High – Cherokee County Jan Williams) concluded the morning activities.
After lunch, the attendees met at Pickens High School media center. With the cooperation of Pickens High School Technology Specialist Troy Palmer (loaded software and provided technical assistance), Sandi Adams, Instructional Technology Trainer from Cherokee County, introduced and trained everyone on digital storytelling programs PhotoStory and Picasa2. Both programs are free. Participants were asked to bring 5 photos from activities at their media center this year. Participants began a presentation for next school year that could be used for Open House or other school activities. Sandi offered tips and tricks on digital pictures, how to edit pictures, incorporate music, narration, etc. The afternoon ended with a What Flavor is Your Library activity from TeacherLibrarian magazine (December 2006) presented by Rebecca Amerson. Participants were treated to ice cream after the activity. A general discussion about the year’s meetings, suggestions for next year’s meetings and door prizes concluded the meeting.
