The GLMA Awards & Grants Committee is pleased to announce the following recipients of the 2007 Mini-Grants:

Jenny Holloman, from Redan Middle School in DeKalb County, will work with Book Club members to read, develop and produce presentations based on the Georgia Book Award nominees. Utilizing song, speech and other creative means, the presentations will be recorded and uploaded to a Video Ipod. The finished product, a compilation of all twenty books, will be available to the entire school via the Ipods and will be presented on the school’s televised morning announcements.

Gwen Bailey, from Cleveland Road Elementary School in Clarke County, will establish a bird viewing area which will include binoculars, bird identification books, bird identification software, data logs, sketch books and an “I Wonder Box.” To encourage pleasure reading, the viewing area will be decorated with pillows, bird mobiles, bird photos and bird book baskets. The area will serve as a starting point for teaching a variety of science concepts and research skills in grades K-5.

Anne Prichard, from Sandersville Elementary School in Washington County, will use grant funds to support a 5th Grade Special Education Class’ interests in gardening. The school currently has a garden and is also a nation-wide test site for a professional iris farm. The students are devoted gardeners and are interested in reading about every aspect of gardening. Multiple copies of applicable titles will support students’ interests and be used to teach reading skills through literature circles.
