GLMA Joins the Atlanta Thrashers to Promote “Junior Authors Program”

Last spring, the Executive Office received a request for GLMA to participate as a community partner in the Atlanta Thrashers Junior Authors Program. The program was designed to foster the literary and artistic talents of Atlanta ’s elementary school students in grades K-5, while raising the profile of the game of ice hockey. GLMA members Pam Nutt and Judy Serritella – who was also representing the Department of Education - and Michelle Holcomb, from the GLMA Executive Office, attended the initial meeting with Atlanta Thrashers representatives to discuss project development and review the program details.

Cawood Cornelius, GLMA President, welcomed the opportunity to partner with the Atlanta Thrashers and the Department of Education on this unique program where students are encouraged to create a book that, upon winning first place, will be bound and published by the Thrashers. The Grand Prize Winner will also have their very own book signings at a Thrashers game and at either a local library or their school media center with the Thrashers General Manager, coach, player, or Thrasher’s Mascot.

In addition to other exciting opportunities, the Grand Prize Winner’s school will receive vouchers for the entire school to attend an Atlanta Thrashers 2006 home game and $2,000 for the school’s media center. There will also be prizes for second through fifth place winners.

Metro Atlanta elementary school Media Specialists were provided with program details and entry information in August. Mary Williams, Director of Community Development for the Atlanta Thrashers, has received overwhelming interest in the program and is anticipating a large number of entries by the December 9, 2005 deadline.
