Georgia Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Northern Regional 2007

Forty-one teams representing 14 school systems and two private schools competed in the third annual northern regional bowl of the Ga. Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl Competition held at the University of West Georgia on March 3, 2007.

School systems represented were from Rome City Schools, Trion City Schools, Marietta City Schools, Clayton County, Cherokee County, Cobb County, DeKalb County, Douglas County, Gordon County, Murray County, Pickens County, Paulding County, Walker County, White County. The two private schools were American Heritage Academy, (Cherokee County) and Mt Vernon Presbyterian School of Atlanta.

Two elementary teams battled it out all the way through 6 rounds. It was the final round that spelled success for Kittredge of DeKalb County as they won over Ashford Park also of DeKalb. Third place award went to Harmony Elementary of Pickens County.

Middle school competition was very intense between Sequoyah Middle School and Chestnut Log Middle School of Douglas County. The two teams were tied at the end of six rounds. The teams huddled in room 207 of the Humanities building and battled out for another 7 questions. Although Chestnut Log will represent the Northern Regional bowl at the state competition in April, both teams received a First Place in the Northern Regional bowl. Jasper Middle School won third Place.

Lithonia High School won over seven other teams in the high school division. Chapel Hill High won second and Pickens County High won third place.

On Saturday, March 3, 2007, 94 teams competed across the state at the same time answering the same set of questions!!! 940 students and their assorted parents, aunts, uncles, grandparents and others spent their Saturday participating in one of the four regional bowls.

Across the state hundreds more were involved in the HRRB in their local school system. In Gwinnett County, on February 24, 49 teams competed, Douglas County had 22 teams. DeKalb 72 Teams, Henry had 12, Muscogee had 12, Camden had 11, Cherokee had 12. 2,000 students have been involved in the HRRB through the aforementioned school systems. There are other school systems who were too small to have a county competition, but sent a team to one of the regional bowls.
Twelve teams representing the winners in each division from each of the regional bowls will compete for the state championship at the University of Georgia on April 21, 2007 during the Ga. Children’s Literature Conference.
