GLMA Grants Awarded

Every year GLMA offers mini grants from $300 to $500 to assist library media specialists in having an exemplary media program in their school. This year, three library media specialists were awarded GLMA grants from a pool of applicants; Sherry Grove, Wayne Smoot, and Thomas Zarilli.

Sherry Grove, from Dougherty Comprehensive High School in Albany, will use her grant to start a Lunch Bunch Club. The club will meet to listen to three African American audiobook selections over lunch. She has chosen All Things Fall Apart by Achebe, Gather Together in My Name by Angelou, and Monster by Myers. Sherry will act as a facilitator, leading discussions of the books while the students interact socially and enjoy a lunch that she provides.

Wayne Smoot, from Ashworth Middle School in Calhoun, will use his grant to help students with low reading skills. Working with language art teachers, he will seek out and purchase high interest/low level Accelerated Reader tests and books to build a library collection keyed to students that are not yet reading at a second grade level. He hopes to cultivate both confidence and a love of reading in the school’s struggling readers.

Thomas Zarrilli, from Robert Shaw Elementary School in Scottdale, plans to upgrade his iMac to enable students to produce more iMovies. Last year, his students won first place in the Georgia Technology Fair with their video project. This year, he hopes to increase the use of the library media center’s iMac with upgrades that will allow more students to create iMoves. He will use his grant to purchase a 40 GB external hard drive and a CDR drive.
