District 8 is invited to participate in two media consortia fall meetings. Media specialists from the western counties may attend the consortium meeting held at the Floyd College EdTech Center in Rome on September 24. Highlights will include a presentation by Judy Serritella from DOE Media Services and Jarrett Volzer from Surpass. Media specialists from the eastern systems may participate in the consortium at North Georgia RESA in Ellijay in late October. For more information contact Lisa Smith at 706-276-1111.

The Gordon Central High School Media Center has been chosen as the High School Exemplary Media Program for 2004. Media specialists Sue Gable and Cawood Cornelius and paraprofessional Christi Gallman have worked to ensure that their media program positively impacts the learning of the students of Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. Plan to visit their media center during the state open house scheduled for October 20 from 1-4 pm. For driving directions, see http://www.gcbe.org/gchs/GCHSHome/gchs_home.html .

Wayne Smoot of Ashworth Middle School in Gordon County has been selected as the Library Media Specialist of the Year for District 8. His media program is extensive and focuses on the promotion of reading and the use of technology. Mr. Smoot’s sense of humor and rapport with his faculty and students make his media center a central part of Ashworth Middle School. Mr. Smoot will be recognized at the GLMA Luncheon during COMO in Athens.

District 8 is invited to participate in the Library Luau hosted by GLMA District 1 at COMO.

Cawood Cornelius, GLMA president-elect, has been selected as the 2004-2005 Teacher of the Year for Gordon Central High School in Calhoun. He will also be representing Georgia in the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program to Japan November 14 – December 3.
