Rebecca Amerson, Millicent Flake

The Gordon Central High School Media Center has been chosen as the High School Exemplary Media Program for 2004. Media specialists Sue Gable and Cawood Cornelius and paraprofessional Christi Gallman have worked to ensure that their media program positively impacts the learning of the students of Gordon Central High School in Calhoun.

Wayne Smoot of Ashworth Middle School in Gordon County has been selected as the Library Media Specialist of the Year for District 8 and was honored by his school district in May. His media program is extensive and focuses on the promotion of reading and the use of technology. Mr. Smoot’s sense of humor and rapport with his faculty and students make his media center the cornerstone of Ashworth Middle School.

Whitfield County media specialists Beverly Stewart and Cristine Goldberg received National Board Certification in November 2003. District 8 now has 4 National Board Certified library media specialists.

Cawood Cornelius, GLMA president-elect and media specialist at Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, has been selected as one of two participants from Georgia for the Fulbright Memorial Fund Teacher Program to Japan for November, 2004. This program will provide a significant professional development opportunity to study Japan and its educational structure.

District 8 participated in two media consortia spring meetings. Media specialists from the western counties attended the consortium meeting held at the Floyd College EdTech Center in Rome. Highlights include sessions by a local story-teller, the PeachStar videostreaming project, and Georgia Media Specialist of the Year Julie Stephens. Media specialists from the eastern systems attended a meeting at North Georgia RESA in Ellijay. The program focused on understanding copyright, followed by a round table discussion of professional issues of concern to everyone.

Retiring media specialist and GLMA member Susan Brown was chosen as Cedartown Middle School’s Teacher of the Year as well as the Polk County Teacher of the Year.

MediaTech will be offered at Floyd ETTC July 12-16. The cost is $50 and 5 SDU's will be earned.
