School Exemplary Media Program for 2004

The Gordon Central High School Media Center has
been chosen as the High School Exemplary Media Program for 2004.
Media specialists Sue Gable and Cawood Cornelius and paraprofessional
Christi Gallman have worked to ensure that their media program
positively impacts the learning of the students of Gordon Central
High School in Calhoun.

Wayne Smoot of Ashworth Middle School in Gordon County has been
selected as the Library Media Specialist of the Year for District
8 and was honored by his school district in May. His media program
is extensive and focuses on the promotion of reading and the use
of technology. Mr. Smoot’s sense of humor and rapport with
his faculty and students make his media center the cornerstone
of Ashworth Middle School.

Whitfield County media specialists Beverly Stewart and Cristine
Goldberg received National Board Certification in November 2003.
District 8 now has 4 National Board Certified library media specialists.
Cawood Cornelius, GLMA president-elect and media specialist at
Gordon Central High School in Calhoun, has been selected as one
of two participants from Georgia for the Fulbright Memorial Fund
Teacher Program to Japan for November, 2004. This program will
provide a significant professional development opportunity to
study Japan and its educational structure.
District 8 participated in two media consortia spring meetings.
Media specialists from the western counties attended the consortium
meeting held at the Floyd College EdTech Center in Rome. Highlights
include sessions by a local story-teller, the PeachStar videostreaming
project, and Georgia Media Specialist of the Year Julie Stephens.
Media specialists from the eastern systems attended a meeting
at North Georgia RESA in Ellijay. The program focused on understanding
copyright, followed by a round table discussion of professional
issues of concern to everyone.
Retiring media specialist and GLMA member Susan Brown was chosen
as Cedartown Middle School’s Teacher of the Year as well
as the Polk County Teacher of the Year.
MediaTech will be offered at Floyd ETTC July 12-16. The cost
is $50 and 5 SDU's will be earned.
Pickens County Middle School won first place in the middle school
division of the 2004 Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. Their team was
sponsored by media specialist Janice Sly. Hill City Elementary
of Pickens County, sponsored by media specialist Nicole Roohi,
placed 3rd in the elementary division. The 2005 Helen Ruffin Reading
Bowl will be held at Pickens County Middle School in Jasper on
March 19.
