Midvale Elementary Students Take 1st Place!
By Susan K. S. Grigsby

For the first time in Midvale’s history, three students who participated in this year’s Social Studies Fair won First Place honors at the County level. The students were sixth-graders, Aja Griffin, David Williams, and Taylor Gibson. Aja and David will represent DeKalb County at the Regional competition.

Mrs. Grigsby and Mrs. Jackson, the 5th and 6th grade social studies teacher, work together at the beginning of the year designing a collaborative unit to help students develop quality research projects for the Fair. Mrs. Grigsby spends a great deal of time teaching the students the steps of The Big6TM and then Mrs. Jackson requires the students to keep track of those steps in their Social Studies notebook. This is the fourth year that Mrs. Grigsby and Mrs. Jackson have worked together on the social studies projects.

“The Big6™ has helped my students get organized and have a clear plan for researching their subject,” Mrs. Jackson said. “I’m very proud of my students’ accomplishments.”
